WEST COAST YACHT CLUBS COMPETE IN SECOND ANNUAL INTER CLUB EVENT
March 10, 2009, San Francisco, California - The Golden Gate Yacht Club is pleased to announce the dates for the second Inter-Yacht Club Challenge. The event will take place over three days, July 24, 25 and 26, 2009. The competition, a Club-centered program, pits club racers--both pros and amateurs--in a unique on-the-water three-day event.
"Our goal this year is to build on the momentum of the 2008 event," said Marcus
Young, Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club. "The idea of making it a Club-focused event is to involve the members from yacht clubs and give them a chance to compete on behalf of their home Club." The event will be raced on identical 1D35 racing yachts.
In 2008, the competition showcased teams representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club, Corinthian Yacht Club, San Francisco Yacht Club, Richmond Yacht Club, Berkeley Yacht Club and South Beach Yacht Club. San Francisco Yacht Club eventually took home the top prize and will be defending their title this year.
"Last year we featured both fleet racing and match racing ? this year we have decided to make it all match racing," said Young. "The reaction from the competitors from last year was that the match racing portion of the program was the most challenging and exciting -- so we want to bring that excitement to this year's event for the entire competition."
The IYCC will feature two complete Round Robins starting on Friday, July 24 and ending on Saturday, July 25. The final racing will take place between the top four finishers on Sunday, July 26.
"This will likely be the only club-focused match racing program on the West Coast in 2009 and we look forward to hosting it," said Mont McMillen, Race Director for the GGYC. Racing takes place along the city waterfront, making the IYCC very spectator friendly.
The IYCC is a unique regatta as it takes an America's Cup-like program featuring both pros and armatures, and compresses the competition into three days. The host for the event is the Golden Gate Yacht Club. SLAM is the presenting sponsor and is providing custom gear for all participants.
"We are fortunate to have a tremendous working relationship with SLAM, and their involvement in this year's event adds tremendous credibility to our efforts," said Young.
